Panel Builder & Systems Integrator was given the opportunity to ask Steve Loftus, President and co-founder of Innovative Automation, about himself, the company and what continues to drive its success.

Changes are coming hard and fast to the control and automation sectors, obligating a rise in knowledgeable and experienced engineers and integrators. Education is the path to ensuring the technological advances continue and are properly implemented and as such Panel Builder & Systems Integrator turned to a control systems student at the University of Waterloo.

 

 

Opus Automation

 

OPUS Automation was founded in 1998 in Ancaster, On and provides robotic and automation solutions throughout Canada and the US. The company was founded by Peter Young, who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from McMaster University where he continued to work as a research engineer and was responsible for the implementation of Canada’s first university-based robotics research facility.

 

 

Redpath Mining

The Redpath Group of mining contractors and engineers, was established by Jim Redpath in 1962, and has since grown into one of the leading mine contractors worldwide. Headquartered in North Bay, Ontario, the Group includes Redpath Raiseboring Limited that provides raisedrill design, manufacturing and contracting expertise to its global customers. In order to fulfill today’s brisk orders for raise drills, streamlined production is paramount, and Redpath and its devoted employees are up to the task.

Safety standards in the electrical industry are constantly evolving and requiring that contractors adapt to changes as fast as they occur. H.J. Bartlett Electric Inc. has evolved along with the changes to ensure it provides the most update to date protection for its workers.

 

 

 

Barnstormer Brewery

Applications for electrical control panels and automation have reached nearly every sector imaginable, including the brewing industry. In Canada, micro breweries are on the rise, and one of leaders of that charge is Barnstormer Brewing and Distilling Co located in Barrie, Ontario. Owned and Operated by Dustin Norland, since 2012 Barnstormer has advanced the abilities of their brewery with the installation of electrical controls for monitoring brewing temperatures, emergency electrical shut-off switches to protect staff and equipment, and implemented a fully automated filling and seaming system.

 

 

 

Intermatic is a North American family-owned energy control company celebrating its 125th year in business. Founded in 1891, the firm has achieved success owing to their unrelenting dedication to forward-thinking, high-calibre employees and reliable products.

 

 

Floyd Lau

 

Floyd Lau founded Amptek Technologies in 2002 as an end to end engineering design company, but it has since grown to produce its own product brand that is now entering the IoT and lighting market.

 

 

Hammond Manufacturing

 

This year Hammond Manufacturing is celebrating 100 years as a Canadian family run company. The business was founded as O.S. Hammond and Son in 1917 in Guelph, Ontario. The company has since expanded to include international manufacturing and distribution facilities but the headquarters and its primary manufacturing location still reside in Guelph.

ABB

ABB has announced a strategic realignment of its global transformer manufacturing, engineering and service footprint to enhance competitiveness in a dynamic market environment marked by increasing competition and consolidation in the rail industry. The move is part of the ‘Power Up’ transformation program in ABB’s Power Grids division.

In the United States, ABB will consolidate its power transformers manufacturing footprint by investing in its South Boston and Crystal Springs units and discontinue production at its unit in St. Louis, Missouri, which will continue to focus on engineering and service activities.

In addition, ABB will establish new traction transformer manufacturing facilities at its South Boston unit to serve rail industry needs. ABB will also expand its medium and large power transformer factory in Varennes, Canada, to better serve the Canadian market.

 HartingHARTING`s compact yet powerful edge computing system MICA (Modular Industrial Computing Architecture) now offers wireless functionality. HARTING teamed with Arrow Electronics, a member of the MICA.network, to develop the MICA Wireless Sensor Networks solution that adds wireless communications to the machine-monitoring system. The two companies unveiled this MICA enhancement at SPS IPC Drives trade show in Nuremberg, Germany.

With the additional module, HARTING MICA is now able to capture and process data through SmartMESH IP (DUST), Bluetooth Low Energy and a XBee slot, regardless of the existing machine controls.

The Mystery of Industrial IoT

Canada’s electricity sector is on track to spend $350 billion between 2010 and 2030 to renew or replace aging infrastructure, with massive capital projects underway or planned in every part of Canada, notes the Canadian Electricity Association. Climate adaptation considerations must inform this infrastructure renewal process. If we don’t, says the association, a substantial and growing body of evidence indicates that the costs of inaction will exceed those of an evidence-based commitment to adaptation investments.

The study, The Impact of Connectedness on Competitiveness, is based on a global survey of 350 executives from large enterprises. It found that more than half (52%) of executives at large enterprises expect IIoT to have a 'significant' or "major" impact on their industry within three years, with another third (32%) forecasting a "moderate" impact in that timeframe.

The new Wöhner CrossBoard is the modular system solution with which safe power distribution up to 125A can be quickly and easily realised, especially in machine and plant engineering.

The CrossBoard is available in a width of 225mm and 405mm. Both can be combined with each other or with other Wöhner systems, such as the 60Classic or 30Compact busbar system.
