Logical Systems Inc. and Klippon Engineering tackle facility shutdowns

Customer Challenge

The company is one of North America’s largest beverage companies and has operated for over two centuries. With facilities running round the clock, any shutdown means a loss of production and revenue in millions of dollars. These facilities are automated but built on old legacy systems which are almost 30 years old. With recent technological development, the company wants to upgrade from the old MODICON control system to a new Rockwell Automation1756 ControlLogix control system; however, this means shutting down operations. In the current case, the estimated migration time for a rip-and-replace hardware conversion of 2100 I/O points spread over 18 racks requires the facility to shut down for 10-14 days.

Solution from Logical Systems Inc. and Klippon Engineering

Since such a prolonged shutdown is not feasible, LSI’s solution was MiBridge from Klippon Engineering. MiBridge offers a bridge solution that does not require additional space in the control cabinet. The adapter chassis is installed in the space previously occupied by the legacy controller and the new controller mounts on the front of the chassis forming one compact unit. As a result, the customer returned to full production after a shutdown of only two days.

Benefits

By partnering with Klippon Engineering and using MiBridge migration solution, LSI met all the critical project metrics – reducing cost by reducing labour, maintaining quality by eliminating the risk of wiring errors, and reducing the scheduled downtime.

“Combining MiBridge hardware with LSI’s engineering and project management expertise helped our customer dramatically reduce downtime to complete the conversion process and return to revenue generation as quickly as possible.”

Chris Harvey, Lead Controls Engineer LSI

“Decades of experience integrating technically advanced systems has helped LSI become one of North America’s largest and most respected system integrators. We have gained a highly respected position in the controls engineering and systems integration arena by providing great service to our customers and staying at the forefront of the technology curve.”

Nick Riggio, President LSI

ADVANCED Motion Controls Takes Servo Drives to New Heights (and Depths) with FlexPro Extended Environment Product Line

Advanced Motion Controls is proud to announce the addition of six new CANopen servo drives with Extended Environment capabilities to their FlexPro line. These new drives join AMC’s existing EtherCAT Extended Environment FlexPro drives, making the FlexPro line the go-to solution for motion control applications in harsh environments.

Many motion control applications take place in conditions that are less than ideal, such as extreme temperatures, high and low pressures, shocks and vibrations, and contamination. Electronics, including servo drives, can malfunction or sustain permanent damage in these conditions.
