Hatch’s Saskatchewan team wins Mission: Zero safety award

June 21, 2019

Hatch’s Saskatoon office, including its associated project sites, is the proud recipient of a Mission: Zero Award from Safe Saskatchewan for their outstanding safety performance in the province of Saskatchewan. The team was honored at the 10th Annual Saskatchewan Health & Safety Leadership Charter event on June 13, 2019 with the top safety award in the medium-sized employer category.

“We are extremely proud to be recognized alongside other organizations that are working towards a safer Saskatchewan,” said Jared Orynik, Hatch’s spokesperson for the program. “Every day, Hatch employees work in partnership with our clients to the goal of Mission: Zero. This award highlights the safe work practices that are core to our safety culture at Hatch, and the dedication of our staff at project sites and in the office to achieve Hatch’s goal of ‘No Harm’ to people, the environment, or the communities that we work in.”

The Mission: Zero Awards were created by Safe Saskatchewan to recognize the leadership of organizations in Saskatchewan that are working to improve the prediction and prevention of injuries in their workplaces, homes, and communities. They are awarded to those workplaces that demonstrate a sustained improvement in their injury rate over time and that influence a transformation in their organizational culture so that injury prevention is a core value.

Last fall, Hatch and 50 other organizations, led by signatories to the Saskatchewan Health and Safety Leadership Charter, participated in the first step of the Mission: Zero Awards assessment by completing an employee survey related to the company’s safety culture. The results were presented in a report by the Centre for Management Development at the University of Regina summarizing and comparing Hatch’s safety culture results with those of similar-sized participating Charter organizations. Hatch’s provincial safety statistics and health and safety culture were other qualifiers for the award.

Dan Welshons, Global Director, Health & Safety, said, “Hatch is committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment across all of our projects and offices. The work of the Saskatoon team exemplifies the safety leadership that we try to instill in our teams around the world as we collectively work towards improving our safety performance at work, at home, and in our communities.”

In October 2018, the Saskatoon office also received their certification through the Certificate of Recognition (COR®) program—a designation verifying that a company has fully-implemented a health and safety program that meets national standards. COR® is a national standard in safety recognition in the safety industry, with an objective of reducing incidents and their associated costs.

Safe Saskatchewan is a registered not-for-profit organization that is led by a consortium of public, private, cooperative, and not-for-profit sector strategic partners. The organization aims to raise awareness of the unintentional injury epidemic in Saskatchewan, coordinate provincial injury prevention initiatives, and support all organizations and programs undertaking injury prevention in the Saskatchewan community.
