Brock Solutions Hosts Kid’s STEM Day
September 5, 2019
Brock Solutions welcomed more than 50 children age 2-14 and their parents to participate in an evening filled with hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) activities. Those activities saw the children, divided by age group, utilize creative problem-solving skills while exploring the forces of friction, creating catapults, designing geometric string art, building circuit boards, and more.
“We wanted to engage the kids with an activity that was challenging, but also suitable for their age level. The younger children were given a less structured environment where they could be introduced to basic STEM concepts through various activities on their own time. As the ages increased, the intricacy of the activities and lessons grew as well, so that the older kids were exploring the ideas of kinetic/potential energies, geometric art through using algorithms and basic electronics and circuitry. Each participant was also given an activity that they could work on and complete at home,” said Amanda Sage, event coordinator.
Included among the children was a group from the House of Friendship, an organization based in Waterloo, ON that provides community resources for those in need. Brock Solutions has cultivated and continues to maintain an ongoing relationship with the House of Friendship , which started with Brock Solutions’ founder, Rick Brock, many years ago.
“The kids were asking if they could come back because of how much fun they had, which exceeded my wildest expectations,” said Jonathan Moyer, House of Friendship Program Coordinator.
This event aligns with Brock Solutions’ core values of fostering innovation and investing in people. Exposing children to science, technology, engineering and math through fun hands-on activities at an early age can spark a future interest in a career in STEM.
“We believe that what we do day-in and day-out is both fun and exciting. Taking the time to bring kids together from both the community and our employee’s families was a great way to teach and show – and maybe even turn a little bit of curiosity into a lasting inspiration!” said Keith Vermeer, Brock Solutions’ Corporate Business Unit Manager.
