In the fall of 2019, Modern Niagara received the 2019 Canada’s Best Health + Safety Culture Award (Silver) and the 2019 Canada’s Safest Employers Award in the Building and Construction category (Gold) from the Canadian Occupational Safety (COS) magazine. Founded in 1959, Modern Niagara is one of Canada’s leading mechanical, electrical, buildings controls, and building services companies.

“Safety is a top priority at Modern Niagara because it is our goal to be the employer of choice for great tradespeople and professionals,” said Modern Niagara CEO Brad McAninch. “In order to accomplish that goal, we absolutely have to provide, not just a safe physical environment, but also a healthy mental and emotional environment for employees.”

Modern Niagara has been recognized for keeping health and safety at the forefront of its day-to-day operations. Not only does Modern Niagara’s safety team participate in estimation for new projects, but Stand Up Moments and Epic Days are also recognized and celebrated. “To us, an Epic Day is a day where no negative situations, like damages or worker injuries, occur, but it is also a day where workers from the field come forward with an idea or an innovation that we could leverage to make a better day,” said Modern Niagara vice president, employee health and safety, Erin Oliver.

Modern Niagara has also kept efficiency as a key priority with the digitization of inspection forms and the availability of a playbook that includes video content on the proper execution of tasks on site.

A key component of the application process for the 2019 Canada’s Best Health + Safety Culture award was a company-wide survey, completed by employees based in the field as well as those based in the office. According to this survey, 99 per cent of Modern Niagara’s employees agree that safety is a key corporate value for the company.

Modern Niagara has also been recognized as the first place winner of SMACNA’s Safety Excellence Award Program (SSEAP) – Canada earlier this year. SMACNA is the Sheet Metal & Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association.
