Safety Requirements and Integration of AGVs

July 26, 2023

Objective

The use of automated guided vehicles (AGV) and vehicle systems (AGVS) and autonomous mobile robots (AMR) is becoming increasingly significant. This is particularly true as they become more autonomous, flexible and independent of the fixed infrastructure in which they are operated.

This training provides a comprehensive insight into the correct operation of AGV / AGVS in the workplace. You will receive all the information you need to know about the key requirements on the safety of AGVS.

As part of the training course you’ll also receive a detailed overview of the functionality of AGV, AGVS and AMR as well as the resulting risk when one or more AGV or AMR are integrated into an existing system. The risks relating to this type of system differ from those of conventional machinery, primarily due to their mobile characteristics. The training course will therefore also teach you the typical measures for risk reduction as well as the use of various safety strategies.

Contents

Legal framework

  • Introduction to the terminology/definitions and legal framework as well as the standards and safety aspects relevant for AGV
  • Laws and standards that apply specifically to AGV:
    • ISO 3691-4 and EN 1175
    • Correlation between the standards
  • Risk reduction
  • Roles and responsibilities of manufacturers, robot integrators and operators

Automated guided vehicle (AGV)

  • Significant hazards associated with AGV, including the relevant requirements from standards specific to AGV:
    • Intended use of the AGV
    • Navigation and collision avoidance
    • Drive system
    • Safety-related parts of the control system
    • Electrical safety
    • Additional hazards
  • Motion safeguarding and load handling by AGV:
    • Safety measures for reducing hazards and requirements for safeguarding
    • Use of laser scanners and other devices for people/obstacle detection and how they work
    • Requirements on verification

Network of automated guided vehicle systems (AGVS)

  • Safety requirements when using AGVS in accordance with ISO 3691-4
  • Hazard assessment for AGVS during application
  • Zonal division of the workplace (operating area, operating danger zone, restricted area and closed area)
  • Protection of people from hazards from an AGVS
  • Management of the residual risk with AGVS
  • Integration and installation of AGVS
  • Use and maintenance of AGVS
  • Practical examples of safety requirements on systems

Target groups

This training is aimed in particular at AGV manufacturers, integrators and users with special responsibility for the use of AGV. Furthermore, the course is specifically geared towards persons who are responsible for machinery safety on new and existing AGV in day-to-day operations, such as:

  • Plant engineers
  • Health and safety officers
  • Project engineers
  • Maintenance personnel
  • Technical engineering managers

Benefits to you

  • Learn how to correctly apply and implement relevant standards and directives and the proven technical methods for integrating AGVS in an industrial environment
  • Manage the risk that arises through the installation and application of automated guided vehicles in the production hall
  • Create competitive advantages when using automated guided vehicle systems by using and implementing the correct safety technologies
  • Assess and evaluate your existing plants with regard to the safety of automated guided vehicle systems
