Pepperl+Fuchs Expands PFD/PFH Calculation Tool in Accordance with VDI/VDE 2180 Part 3 Update

September 23, 2019

Adapted to edition 2 of EN 61511, a fundamentally reworked version of VDI/VDE 2180 has been released recently. Part 3 provides new formulas for PFD calculation, which take into account a three-step test concept according to NAMUR worksheet NA 106 with incomplete tests and are suited for diverse structures.

So that users can manage this increasing complexity, Pepperl+Fuchs is offering an updated version of its online tool for PFD/PFH calculation to coincide with the release of the updated standard. This free, completely browser-based tool now contains a section for the new, more complex PFD calculation in accordance with VDI/VDE 2180 Part 3.

Focus on Users

In addition to PFD calculation in accordance with VDI/VDE 2180, the tool also supports PFD and PFH calculation in accordance with EN 61508. All relevant formulas are stored directly in the system. Users only have to enter the parameters of their safety application while the tool takes on the actual calculation work.

Detailed tips for the respective field functions simplify operation and help avoid misunderstandings. As a special service, users can opt in, have the calculation results automatically sent to their email addresses as a PDF file, and add this document to their plant documentation.

Up to the Standard

Dr. Andreas Hildebrandt, functional safety expert and Manager of Training and Committee Work at Pepperl+Fuchs, comments: “The fact that we are releasing a new version of our tool at the same time as the release of the new standard proves once again that we, as market leader in the field of functional safety, are always at the forefront of the latest adaptations and developments. This will, of course, benefit users, who will find it much easier to apply the expanded guideline with free assistance.”

The PFD tool is also part of Pepperl+Fuchs’ “Functional Safety Hub.” This dedicated website compiles additional expert knowledge and offers a free downloadable compendium on functional safety.

PFD/PFH Calculation Tool Highlights

  • Automatic calculation of PFD according to VDI/VDE 2180 and PFD and PFH according to EN 61508
  • Free-of-charge and completely browser-based—no installation necessary
  • Detailed explanation of field functions
  • Ad hoc send out of calculation results including entries and applied formulas
